Although each state/province can have their own regulations, the main distinction between them comes down to education, training and their approach or style of therapy. Some professionals have specialties, which are usually declared on their profile or website. All those listed in this directory have training or experience with the sensitive trait or empath challenges (and most are HSPs themselves).

This is a common question. Mostly, parents are wanting to find someone who is knowledgeable and experienced with HSP/empath traits. While this directory will help with that, I encourage you to invite your child to participate in the selection process. If you are able to find more than one professional who meets your needs "on paper", then schedule a phone consultation so you and your child can get a better feeling of what they're like.

I might also suggest having 2 or 3 questions prepared for the phone consult. Perhaps it would help to know if the person is also an HSP/empath, or what type of approach they take (talk therapy, behavioral therapy, holistic/alternative).

Once the therapy/counseling/coaching has begun, it's good to allow a few sessions to build rapport, establish trust, and find 'the groove'.

The good news is... it can happen at any time. Yet as with any health goal, even when you reach it, it takes work to stay there. That's why it's more effective if the "goal" is based on the behavior (EX: enjoying nature and socializing) rather than the results of the behavior (being happy).

Working together as a family can be a positive influence, yet remember that the most effective growth and development happens when it comes from the child themselves. Sometimes the best help you can give is to say 'I'm here if you need me.' And then listen when they're ready to talk. You may or may not always understand what they are saying or feeling. And while you want to solve their problems, ease their hurt and make it all better, LISTENING actually does that.

The other thing you can do to help your child is to take care of yourself. Be an example to them of self-care and self-love. You will also find in this directory a number of professionals, including myself, who work with the parents of HSP/empaths. Their guidance can help you stay healthy and strong as you help your child do the same.
